Emergence
The Office of Experiments was initiated by the artist Neal White in 2004/5 as a result of a long series of interventions in knowledge spaces - through artist residencies. The instituted process was based intitially on a concept to offer an open space in which to house small-scale experiments for artists prior to the implementation of a collaborative project between Neal White and N55 created; SPACE ON EARTH STATION, a project that finally took place in 2006. Operating as a social meeting point and studio/office, it aimed to provided a temporary space for experiments to be developed and tested that would later take place in the LAB space of the project. The first Office of Experiments was based in the administrative facility of our commissioning agent in Whitechapel, London. For an 18 month period, it occupied the corner of an office, with a small reading desk, drawing table, tools and work area.
The Office of Experiments has since worked in collaboration with a range of innovating individuals and organisations that have given rise to extraordinary practices and knowledge. Recently these include: John Latham and Flat Time House, Elisa Kay, Antony Hudek, Tina O'Connell, Steve Rowell, Sarah Andrews, The Centre for Land Use Interpretation, Barbara Steveni, Max-Planck Institute, Dr.Nicolas Langlitz, Sue Breakell, Neil Cummings, Jens Hauser, Simon Gould and, Jim Wood.
The Office of Experiments has recently worked on projects with the help of: The Latham Estate, O+I (formerly Artist Placement Group), The Arts Catalyst, The Henry Moore Foundation, Camberwell Offsite Projects, The Arts Catalyst, John Hansard Gallery, Chelsea College of Art (Critical Practice), The Media School at Bournemouth University and FACT.
